Chris Barker has been Chairman of Eastern Region since 2005. A motivated self-starter, he set up his practice, Barker Associates (previously Barker & Associates) in 1987, operating from his house in Clavering. From its origin as a 3 man band, the practice has grown to 35 strong with a wide client-base that covers not only all the UK but also abroad. 

 

Chris cut his surveying teeth working for both Hertfordshire and Essex County Councils earlier in his career. Between the local authority stints, he spent 3 years in Hong Kong as Area Surveyor responsible for the construction of the new town of Tuen Mun. 

 

His keen interest in Conservation led him to specialise in this field where his knowledge is encyclopaedic. 

 

A strong supporter of the APC system and the learning process, Chris has been APC Examiner and Chairman since 1987. 

 

He has served on Governing Council Board since 2005 and has a keen interest in the future path of the RICS and how that impacts on its members.

 

Chris has an abiding interest in people and countries and when he is not wading through muddy building sites or scaling up roofs of old buildings and churches - or swinging a golf club in a green somewhere - he loves to travel.
