building condition issues

FREE help with UCS

Urgent Capital Support (UCS) is available for academies and sixth-form colleges that are eligible for the main Condition Improvement Funding (CIF) round. The aim of the fund is to provide vital funding support to address urgent building condition issues that put the health and safety of individuals at risk, or threaten partial or whole closure of a school.

UCS applications can be made outside the main Condition Improvement Funding round where there is genuine need for support that cannot wait till the next main CIF funding round.

Condition related issues that may be granted UCS funding include:

  • Urgent asbestos removal
  • Urgent health and safety issues
  • Structural issues
  • Roof refurbishment
  • Boiler and pipework failure
  • Fire protection
  • Electrical safety issues

It should be noted that this list is not exhaustive and other applications of a different nature that can illustrate urgent necessity may be granted funding as well.

Barker Associates were appointed by Ormiston Academies Trust to provide assistance with the rectification of significant defects identified in a new build secondary school and the demolition of the redundant secondary school and associated landscaping works.

Following a thorough review, a compelling case was compiled and submitted to the EFA by EO Consult in conjunction with Barker Associates to request a funding of £4 million to complete the main issues identified including asbestos removal, demolition of redundant buildings, fire and accessibility issues, roofing, mechanical and electrical compliance.

All identified works were completed to the full satisfaction of the school, Ormiston Academies Trust and the EFA. Works were completed with minimal disruption to the operation of the school, with any internal or significant works being programmed for holiday periods.
