Overview
The Headmaster’s Boarding House fronts the High Street and is one of the most visible parts of the Harrow School Estate. The works to this Grade II Listed building comprised major window repair and redecoration, replacement roof coverings, structural repairs and redecoration to balconies, brickwork repointing, and refurbishment of external metalwork. The works were carefully undertaken by Mitre Construction.

The Challenges
Working on occupied school residential buildings required a sensitive approach and careful management of contractors to ensure that safeguarding requirements were always adhered to. To minimise disruption to the school, the works were carefully programmed around key dates, utilising summer holidays when possible.

The building also abuts the public highway, so necessary licensing and scaffold safeguarding measures had to be implemented to ensure the continuity of the work in a safe way.

The Outcome
This high-profile building now reflects the high standards of Harrow School. Delivery of the projects was overseen by Barker and carefully organised to minimise disruption to the occupants of the building.

The refurbished building envelope is now watertight and will require minimal maintenance over the next 25 years. The careful management of the high street works maintained the positive ongoing relationship between the school and the public.

Our team also future proofed any roof maintenance through a successful listed building application. The successful application will ensure a man-safe system and easy roof access.
