Barker were appointed as Lead Consultant as part of a successful Design and Build submission with Beardwell Construction to deliver Braintree District Council’s I-Construct Innovation Hub at Springwood Drive, Braintree, Essex.
The project involves creation of a two-storey business hub to support SMEs working in the construction industry. The hub containing workshops, a technology lab, conference and networking facilities, a café and meeting areas will enable collaboration and job opportunities in supply chains across the South East Local Enterprise Partnership regions.
Braintree District Council and Haven Partnership had a site and clear vision of how they wanted this future community building to function and feel. Barker were approached to successfully translate the client’s vision for a modern-day sustainable development into a tangible architectural proposal delivered by a local contractor and design team.
Community engagement and the use of Building Information Modelling were essential to the future successful delivery of the project. Our collaborative approach enabled a cohesive development which both met demands of the local community it serves, as well as ensuring that the project lifecycle is managed to increase productivity in building design and construction. The culmination of this collaborative approach was a successful planning application, a particular achievement considering the location within a tight urban industrial state site.
By pushing the boundaries of design, the project team has been able to commit to achieving BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating on the project.
The project was granted Planning Consent in September 2019 with building works now well in progress, and anticipated to complete in Autumn 2021.
