St Mary the Virgin Church – Tower and Spire Repairs

  • Client: St Mary Parochial Church Council – St Mary the Virgin Church
  • Value: £550,000
  • Location: Baldock, Hertfordshire
  • Sector: Heritage and Conservation
  • Services: Building Surveying

The project
Barker assisted the PCC in the preparation and submission of a Heritage Lottery Funding (HLF) bid for urgent high-level repairs to the church tower.

Barker also designed and managed the grant-funded works.

The challenge
A Victorian repair of Roman cement was deteriorating due to water ingress and rusting ferrous fixings. Barker developed and specified sympathetic and practical repairs in line with good conservation philosophy. A major element of the project was the design, erection and striking of a scaffold to the full height of the spire.

The solution
Stainless steel, render and brickwork repairs were commissioned to reinstate the Medieval and Victorian detailing. To maximise the benefit of the scaffold, the opportunity was also taken to repair and re-lead the spire, last undertaken in 1816.

The outcome
The successful restoration of the church tower is a major step in realising the vision of the PCC to secure the future of this iconic building. Future projects are to repair roofs and introduce sustainable energy technologies to further enhance this community resource.

Client Testimonials

“Thank you once again and I look forward to your input and advice on further restoration and maintenance work on the Church. It is clear that the support and recommendations that you make are recognized as extremely valuable not only by the Church but also the community and perhaps especially those who understand the complexities and difficulties of caring for ancient buildings.

With many thanks and every good wish.”
