The new Windhill Churches Centre building for community use has been constructed jointly between St Joseph’s Catholic Church and St Michael’s Anglican Church in the centre of Bishops Stortford. Barker Associates was appointed to provide project management, quantity surveying, structural engineering, services design and CDMC services. Architectural design was provided by SHMG Architects.
The building situated in the Old Monastery Gardens off Windhill had significant access issues for the construction process. The location of the building required careful and clever design for the foundation and structure of the building to ensure there was no damage to existing trees. This was achieved by the use of a ‘no-dig’ foundation solution with non-load bearing ground beams cantilevered from a run of foundation pads set back from the line of the external elevations of the building. An arboriculturalist was employed to ensure the proposal was acceptable and carried out successfully.
