Staff Spotlight: Joseph Wood Architectural Assistant (Part 1)

Staff Spotlight: Joseph Wood Architectural Assistant (Part 1)

The spotlight is shining brightly on Architectural Assistant (Part 1) Joseph Wood this month! Joseph is a relatively new recruit having joined the Cambridge office 4 months ago, so we took this as a great opportunity to get to know him and see how his Barker journey is going so far!

Hi Joseph! It’s so lovely to meet you! Let’s start by outlining what a typical working day looks like for you here at Barker?

Once I arrive at the office I set up my laptop and then its straight to the kitchen for my compulsory morning cup of tea! I spend some time checking through my emails, catching up on active projects, prioritising my workload and keeping an eye out for any potential work coming in. Depending on what stage the project I am working on is at, I might be hand sketching layouts for concept or feasibility, writing up design and access statements for planning applications or spending my time on AutoCAD working on floor plans and technical details for tender packages. Based in the Cambridge office, I work closely with the surveyors helping them on projects as well as running separate architectural team projects with our conservation architect Juan.

How did you find yourself in this industry and what drew you to this job role?

I will hold my hands up and say that watching Grand Designs on Channel 4 heavily influenced my decision to study architecture at university. I had an interest in art and history at school, whilst also having a natural knack for maths so architecture perfectly linked these various skills and interests together. I have worked in more technical roles for manufacturers and more design focused roles for small design practices. My role at Barker balances both technical and design nicely.

What have been the highlights of your career so far?

I have only been at Barker for a few months but have already got stuck into some really interesting projects! One project where a listed property suffered severe fire damage has taught me a lot and used a wide range of my skill set. I have also just taken on a project at a football stadium which is not something you get the opportunity to do every day!

What are your aspirations for the future?

My goal is to progress in this role, taking on more responsibility and running projects. I also want to continue my studies to complete my masters and Part 2 before moving onto my Part 3.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I have been taking the time to do a lot more reading recently and enjoy the slower pace as I find life can be very hectic at points. I have also accumulated sound system equipment from family and have been collecting CDs and Vinyl for a while now, so I enjoy listening to an album while I cook in the evenings.

What have enjoyed about working for Barker so far?

Barker offers the opportunity to work on such a wide range of projects and they really support individual development. The hybrid working that they offer is also a bonus as it eases my weekly commute. The Cambridge office has a great atmosphere to work in and the team have been so helpful and welcoming. I look forward to continuing my career with Barker.
