United Learning Trust appointed Barker to support Banstead Preparatory School with the full replacement of its ageing boiler room and oil-fed heating system.
Working in partnership with the client and contractors, the project delivered a modern, efficient gas-fired heating solution for the main school building.
The school required a complete strip out of the existing oil-fired system, including safe removal of the external oil tank, and installation of a reliable, compliant and energy-efficient gas-fired alternative.
United Learning Trust sought a partner who could oversee the design, coordination and cost management elements while ensuring minimal disruption to the school.

During the works, several unforeseen issues emerged, including hidden defects and system components requiring urgent upgrade. Barker and the contractors worked collaboratively to evaluate technical options quickly and identify opportunities for value engineering.
Regular communication between the project team, school site staff and the Trust enabled efficient decision-making and helped mitigate delays. Thanks to flexible project sequencing and the school’s willingness to accommodate access, disruption to pupils and staff was kept to an absolute minimum
The project delivered a fully modernised, efficient gas-fired heating system that will serve the school reliably for years to come. Completing well under budget allowed the school to resolve additional legacy items within the same programme, maximising long-term value.
