Overview
Brook Weston and Ormiston Academies Trust spent over £2.7m a year on energy and needed to spend over £1m on lighting replacement over the next 5 years. In response to this, Barker and EO Consulting were tasked with developing and implementing an energy efficiency programme.

The Brief
Barker obtained £2.8m funding via a bidding process with the ESFA through the Multi Academy Trust capital loans pilot scheme to replace all existing light fittings with LED units. This enabled our team to provide and install PV Panels to 13 academies in the trusts.

Barker provided project management and supervision under NEC3 to administer the contract. We lead the project through the initial procurement process, interviews, selection of successful contract suppliers and placement of contracts.

Post-contract, we continued to project manage the works. This involved providing instruction, early warning notices and managing compensation events. The supervisor role inspected the installations to provide confirmation of quality and conformance and worked on the specification and management of the snagging process.

A substantial amount of the work was undertaken during the holiday periods and out of work hours.

The Outcome
The Pilot Scheme saw over 15,000 lamps replaced with LEDs. This meant the trusts could reduce their electricity bills by 30%. Each academy’s roof was also installed with 50kW photovoltaic arrays (PV Panels) to reduce electricity consumption and allow academies to produce their own electricity.

The PV Panels have the capacity to generate over 700,000 kWh of electricity per annum for the next 25 years and will save the trusts over £2 million after the loan has been repaid.

Client Testimonials

“Data gathered from the first 12 months has shown that the project delivers the initial vision and can leave a legacy of over £2m of free electricity.”

Matt Isherwood, Brooke Weston Academies Trust and James Miller, Ormiston Academies Trust
