Keen to expand their sports facilities Poole Grammar School approached Ball Hall Ltd and Acheson Construction Ltd for a funding model and construction of a purpose-built Sports Hall, Gym and Administration Centre.
Poole Grammar School secured funding through the DfE Condition Improvement Fund to support the delivery of a replacement sports facility including a five court sports hall, changing rooms, fitness studio, classrooms and an internal specialist climbing chamber.
Barker’s design team worked alongside sports hall specialist Ball Hall and the client team to design and achieve planning approval for this large new building on a site with significant constraints including the demolition of the original sports hall that was being replaced. The delivery of the project also needed to carefully consider delivery within a live academic environment, particularly with regard to health and safety and minimising disruption.
The project was delivered under a Design and Build procurement method with the Barker Architectural and Structural / Civil Engineering Team being novated to the Contractor, Acheson Construction, for technical design and construction phase services. This ensured maximum value for money whilst also maintaining project knowledge through to completion.
The design comprised a steel framed primary structure clad with robust and durable brickwork at lower levels and composite metal cladding at upper levels with green and yellow accent panels to add visual interest. Internally, spaces were logically arranged to maximise efficiency. A generous first floor corridor provides access to new classrooms together with viewing areas looking into the main sports hall space.
The new facility was delivered to a high standard, on programme and on budget and has received positive feedback from project stakeholders both in terms of the collaborative nature of the delivery process and the design and quality of the completed facilities which will provide exceptional sports facilities for the students and local community.
