A devastating fire swept through St. John the Baptist Church in Royston, causing extensive damage to the roof, tower, bells, nave floor, and organ. The fire, which started in the tower, destroyed the bell ringing chamber and significantly damaged the medieval nave roof, particularly at the west end. Water from firefighting efforts added further damage, causing the floor to collapse in places. The cause of the fire remains unknown.
Barker Associates was appointed to restore this Grade I Listed Church. Drawing on our extensive experience in the conservation, restoration, and refurbishment of historic buildings, our team carefully salvaged and restored key architectural features, including memorial plaques, statues, and stained glass. Ensuring that the church’s heritage was preserved.
In addition to restoration, we implemented targeted improvements to enhance the building’s resilience and long-term functionality. This included timber roof repairs, the restoration of the clock tower and bells, and sensitive interventions designed to protect and preserve the church for generations to come.
Restoring historic buildings requires specialist expertise. Poorly executed renovations can inadvertently cause more long-term damage than the original incident. Barker’s surveyors and architects hold specialist conservation accreditations, including RICS Certified Historic Building Professional status and registered RIBA Conservation Architects.
St. John the Baptist Church has been returned not only to its former condition but also strengthened for the future. The project stands as a testament to the importance of expert conservation, where heritage is preserved, functionality is restored, and historic buildings continue to inspire for generations to come.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Barker. From their initial visit they have reassured us by their expertise and professionalism, so what felt like an impossible burden has been shared.”
