Rosebery School – Solar PV Programme

  • Client: GLF Schools
  • Location: Epsom, Surrey
  • Sector: Education
  • Services: Building Surveying, Project Management, Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, Energy & Sustainability, Contract Management, Principal Designer

OVERVIEW

GLF Schools is a growing Multi Academy Trust. As a responsible Trust, they were keen to address their sustainability objectives through decarbonisation of the estate and reduce reliance on natural gas. The client wanted a system that allowed energy monitoring, lowered carbon emissions and offered long-term financial return on investment.

THE BRIEF

Barker were appointed to undertake feasibility of solar PV programme for 8 GLF Schools – Rosebery being one. A thorough feasibility established the condition of the roofs, restrictions and analysed existing electrical infrastructure. The team developed detailed PV designs that would deliver maximum energy and financial benefits. The project was then taken forward through traditional procurement.

THE CHALLENGE

Working in a live school environment, the team had to ensure safe movement of people and materials. Operational consideration was also critical whilst undertaking works to the existing electrical systems without impacting the day-to-day activities of the school.

THE OUTCOME

Since installation Rosebery School has seen a positive impact supporting its decarbonisation goals.

• 25% of the site’s overall annual consumption is being met by the use of the new solar PV array.
• Annual savings of more than £77,000 (based on current utility provider costs (p/kWH)).
• Projected savings on energy bill is circa £2.4 million over the 25-year design life of the asset.
• All installation components are warranted for a minimum of 20 years providing the client with a long term, low risk solution.
• 38.73tn of CO2 emissions is saved annually. This is equivalent to 1,779 trees planted each year.

Rosebery School and the Trust are pleased with the outcomes and have successfully implemented similar programmes across 30 other schools, taking them one step closer to achieving net zero.
