About The Service

At Barker, our MEP Building Services Engineering Team develops solutions that work seamlessly within the wider design of a building. Early collaboration between our mechanical and electrical engineers, architects, and surveyors shapes outcomes that are efficient, coordinated, and ready to perform.

We understand the technical demands of modern projects; therefore, we bring clear-headed insight to working within tight time pressures, spatial constraints, and live operational sites. Our experience spans commercial, residential, and education schemes where we combine clear communication with clever design to support successful results.

Every project is underpinned by a commitment to efficiency, resilience, and long-term value. Working as part of an integrated team means services are never treated in isolation, and our combined focus is on solutions that enhance the spaces people use every day. Careful planning and straightforward communication help us translate design intent into resilient systems on site.

Mechanical Design

Mechanical systems sit at the heart of building performance. Whether developing air distribution strategies, optimising plantroom configurations, or selecting low-carbon technologies, our focus is always on delivering mechanical systems that work seamlessly within the wider building fabric.

By modelling mechanical systems early in the design process, we anticipate integration challenges, reduce construction risks, and deliver designs that are straightforward to install and operate. The result is a system that not only performs effectively from the outset but also adapts to future demands.

Electrical Design

Electricity is the lifeblood of modern buildings, shaping how spaces are used and experienced. Our role is to make that invisible infrastructure work effortlessly. Whether it’s the reliability of a hospital’s emergency backup, the comfort of well-designed lighting in a school, or the resilience of power networks in complex developments.

Rather than treating systems in isolation, we design with the whole building in mind: anticipating load demands, planning distribution routes, and integrating renewable technologies where possible. The outcome is simple: buildings that are safe, efficient, and ready to meet the expectations of the people who depend on them.

Low Carbon Consultancy Services

Every building has a carbon footprint. The question is whether it will hold you back or set you ahead. Our low-carbon consultancy focuses on turning sustainability targets into action: photovoltaic (PV) solar panels that generate clean power, LED lighting strategies that cut waste, and recommended upgrades that improve overall efficiency.

Sustainability is not a byword for meeting today’s environmental targets; it’s a pathway for lower operating costs and reduced reliance on fossil fuels. Our consultancy bridges the gap between regulation and real-world operation to help buildings achieve measurable performance gains that benefit both the environment and the bottom line.

Dynamic Thermal Modelling More
Construction Stage Management Duties More
Client Representative Duties More

Dynamic Thermal Modelling

Dynamic thermal modelling allows us to simulate how a building will perform under real-world conditions, accounting for variables such as solar gain, ventilation, occupancy, and mechanical systems. It takes into account that a building is more than a drawing on paper; rather, it’s an environment that people live and work in.

We use dynamic thermal simulations to turn assumptions into evidence. For clients, it means fewer surprises, lower running costs, and the reassurance that their building will perform exactly as intended.

Construction Stage Management Duties

Installing MEP systems can be complex, with many moving parts and tight timelines. Our construction stage management service ensures nothing is left to chance. We act as the client’s eyes and ears on-site and supervise every step to make sure systems are correctly installed, contractors work in harmony, and standards are met.

The result is a smoother build process, fewer surprises, and fully operational mechanical and electrical systems ready to meet the building’s needs from day one.

Client Representative Duties

We work as an extension of our clients, bridging the gap between design intent and on-site delivery. We act as an advocate to translate technical complexity into clear guidance. We review designs, track installations, and flag potential issues before they become problems.

Clients benefit from a clear line of communication, reduced risk, and confidence that building systems are delivered to specification, on schedule, and to the highest standard.

What Our MEP Building Services Clients Say About Us

“Barker are working with us to create a fantastic new nursery and extension for our members. Their guidance and expertise have been hugely beneficial and have allowed us the scope to utilise our space in the best possible way. We look forward to seeing the project develop from concept to reality. Our experience with Barker is very positive. We recommend them wholeheartedly.”

Richard Smith, Treasurer

“Barker have been instrumental in the delivery of this project. Every unforeseen issue and hiccup in the project was dealt with quickly and efficiently. Barker has a range of knowledge, which is clear from the number of specialists they have been able to bring to the project during its implementation. The Diocese of Salisbury Academy Trust have deeply enjoyed this journey and would happily embark on another with Barker in the future.”

Michael Harvey, Estates Manager

“We first engaged with Barker in 2019, and it quickly became obvious that, like us, they were ambitious and passionate about providing class-leading facilities. From the word `go’, Barker were professional, proactive, and displayed their expertise. They fully engaged the College and provided invaluable advice throughout the process.

We are extremely pleased with the new Music and Performing Arts Block. The children and teachers love it. We would not hesitate to recommend Barker to anyone looking for project management, consultancy or surveying services. We will certainly continue working with them.”

St Dunstan's College

“Barker have approached the Post 16 expansion project with the enthusiasm and professionalism that we have come to expect from them. They have supported us at every stage of the process, including the initial feasibility walk-throughs, where they were instrumental in locating the best position of the building, through to the on-site set-up. They provided us with a number of designs and explained clearly the advantages and disadvantages of each. This enabled us to make a valued decision on the final design.

In summary, Barker have worked in close collaboration with us to ensure that this project complied with the local authority planning requirements and the BREEAM conditions at an affordable cost. We have found their advice and support invaluable.”

Alexa Rendell

“I was really impressed with Barker’s support right from the Feasibility Study to Handover. It was great to have support along the way, and it’s great to see the electricity savings are in line with those modelled in the Feasibility Study.”
