Windsor Academy Trust, a respected educational institution, aimed to transform its girls’ and boys’ toilets at Cheslyn Hay Academy into a modern, open-plan facility with individual cubicles and a central sink area. Barker was selected to manage the entire RIBA process, from obtaining the client brief through to completion and the end of defects. This project was driven by the need to enhance the school’s facilities while ensuring minimal disruption to students.
Windsor Academy Trust sought to upgrade its toilet facilities to create a more modern and functional space. Barker was chosen for this project due to their established working relationship with the trust and their expertise in managing comprehensive construction processes. The deliverables included a complete transformation of the toilet facilities within a restricted timeframe.
The primary challenge was the tight programme. The works did not commence until the end of July, which was already a week into the school term break. This left only five weeks to complete the project before pupils returned to the site. To meet this deadline, the team worked weekends and right up until the day before the pupils returned. Ensuring the toilets were usable and addressing minor snagging items and additional instructed works within this period required meticulous planning and execution.
The project was a great success. Despite the tight deadline, the toilets were completed and in a usable position with only minor snagging items remaining. The team’s dedication to working weekends and up to the last day ensured that there was no disruption to the pupils. The new open-plan toilets were well-received by all parties, fulfilling Windsor Academy Trust’s vision and enhancing the school’s facilities.
