Henrietta Barnett School- New Paving to Main Building Quad

  • Client: Henrietta Barnett School
  • Location: Hampstead Garden Suburb, London
  • Sector: Education
  • Services: Project Management, Funding

OVERVIEW

The Henrietta Barnett School is a non-denominational grammar school for girls aged 11-18. Founded in 1911 and situated in Hampstead Garden Suburb, the school is a charming Lutyens-designed Grade II* Listed Building.

The Quad provides the main access route to the school reception and is also an emergency exit route in the event of a fire. The condition of the paving within the Quad had deteriorated resulting in loose and uneven paving and varying surface finishes. The declining and unsafe access compromised the safety of users and visitors to the buildings. Barker were appointed to reinstate the access area in the Quad.

THE BRIEF

Barker prepared a Condition Improvement Fund bid for the replacement of the paving within the Quad including improved access. The bid was successful, and work commenced soon after.

THE CHALLENGE

The existing paving and tarmac finishes within the Quad were removed and replaced with new Yorkstone paving. A new access slope and steps were formed to match the existing arrangement. New raised brick planters were constructed to incorporate biophilia and softening of the Quad.

THE OUTCOME

The scheme was approved by the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust prior to commencement with full planning and listed building consent obtained. The Quad is now enhanced with a safe and aesthetic path for the students, staff and visitors.

Client Testimonal

“Thank you to Barker for their excellent support with our CIF bid to replace the ageing and unsafe Quadrangle surface. Having secured funding the team also managed works on the Quad, swiftly addressing any issues that arose and completing the project to a high standard making it a safe and welcoming entrance to our school. “
