Overview
Barker was tasked with procuring and managing the refurbishment of Harrow School’s Grade II* Listed War Memorial Building. The works comprised major window repair and refurbishment, plus rewiring and redecorating key rooms.
Our team completed a detailed survey of metal windows and stained glass to inform the design and specification. These works were completed by Ark Stained Glass.
The lighting scheme was designed to incorporate modern LED fittings with DALI controls to achieve different colours and moods. Electrical works were completed by Instalec.
We then completed internal redecoration, including an overhaul and repair of historic timber panelling. The decoration work was completed by Bakers of Danbury.
The Challenges
It was necessary to accommodate the ongoing commercial activities of the school, which hosted weddings and filming during the construction of the project. This required our building surveyors to facilitate a careful dialogue between contractor and employer to coordinate the complex logistics and access requirements.
The Outcome
This project was part of an ambitious capital programme, and our team successfully delivered a sensitively restored and fit-for-purpose building. The innovative use of lighting and a sensitive restoration of historic glazing in the memorial building has created a flexible space that is suitable for a variety of functions – both for Harrow school and its commercial arm.
