Ongar Primary School is part of the Bridge Academy Trust. After years of suffering with leaks to the roof and inability to maintain the roof due to its size and shallow pitch, it was decided to replace the existing roof including the roof lantern parts of which posed a real health and safety risk.
Barker were asked to provide a cost option and report on a suitable roof replacement. On selection, the team commenced preconstruction negotiations to secure material suppliers and contractors, value engineering the cost to an acceptable level for the client.
Throughout the preconstruction process Barker’s team liaised with Langley and Cambridge Flat Roofing to provide best value for the client. This involved securing fixed prices and where possible reduced rates for items such as rooflights and tiled panels.
Of the various options presented the client chose Decra profiled metal tiled sheets. This option negates the need for ongoing maintenance and offers long term cost savings.
Completion of this project has secured several benefits for the school critically having zeroed the risk of falling debris from broken tiles and decaying lights. The new robust roof is secure and requires minimal maintenance. The rooflights installed can be opened during warmer months for ventilation. Both roof covering and rooflights now achieve fully compliant U values making the building more energy efficient. The classrooms within are safe, secure and temperature moderated enhancing teaching and learning experiences for both staff and pupils.
