Overview
Preston Manor School suffered a fire to the school’s main reception, offices and corridor space at the start of 2023. It was of paramount importance to ensure the site was quickly and safely up and running for students and staff. Barker were instructed to undertake temporary works as well as the reinstatement of all fire damaged areas.
The Brief
Barker worked with McLaren’s, a loss adjustment company, to agree the projects scope, from this the fire damage reinstatement works were competitively tendered and the project commenced at the end of June 2023 seeing completion in October 2023.
The Solution
In order to restore the fire damaged areas at Preston Manor School, Barker undertook the following jobs:
• Strip out and replacement of existing fire damaged and failed elements
• partitions
• suspended ceilings
• rooflights
•internal and external doors
•windows
•floor/wall finishes (including sanding and re-sealing the existing parquet flooring, radiators, lighting, security/fire alarm systems, fixtures and fittings (bench seating, desks, storage space)
The Outcome
The client, staff and students were extremely pleased with the outcome of the project. Barker worked quickly and efficiently to resolve the issues Preston Manor had experienced, enabling the day to day running of the school to resume as quickly as possible.
“When our reception and front corridor was destroyed in a fire, it was an enormous relief when we realised that Barker Associates could assist with the insurance claim and reinstatement project. This took a great amount of work off our hands whilst we could concentrate on the day to day logistics. From the immediate aftermath of the fire when they came on site to guide us through the initial stages of recovery, to the handover 10 months later, they were outstanding. We were assigned a specific consultant who acted as our project manager and he remained in constant contact with us and kept us informed at all stages. Any issues or queries that arose with the building contractors were dealt with swiftly and all options were explained to us in a straightforward manner. We hope to never need support of this kind again, but we would not hesitate to appoint Barker Associates for any such projects in the future if needed. “
