The Bedfordshire Schools Trust is a long-standing client of Barker. The client requested an improved changing room area for the pupils, as the existing layout did not meet the school’s requirements. The WCs were outdated, and the corridors leading to the adjoining classroom area were underutilised.
Barker was selected to provide the agreed design and specifications for the new WCs and changing room layout. The client requested a new DDA-compliant WC, a new staff changing room with a shower, new boys’ and girls’ changing rooms, and separate unisex WCs, while also upgrading the current cleaner’s room and another storage room. Several designs were created to assist the client in decision-making, with budgetary constraints considered throughout. High-level costs were produced along with a summary scope of works, advising the client on which items would have the most impact on the changing room space.
Any challenges during the works were promptly addressed by closely collaborating with the principal contractor, AM Builders. This was particularly evident during the new drainage works, which were deeper than anticipated. Thanks to AM Builders’ flexibility and capability in handling unforeseen circumstances, the works remained on schedule and were signed off by building control at the required stages. A site manager was always available to resolve any on-site issues and liaised daily to ensure the client was kept informed in a timely manner.
A new M&E specification was produced by sub-consultant TP Engineering, who assisted with all M&E aspects of the work, ensuring compliance with current building regulations.
The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with all PE staff thanking the team for the improvements made to the changing rooms. The school now has a changing room space that can be made available to the wider public for sports pitch or sports hall bookings, benefitting both the school and community.
“From a vague idea, Barker used their knowledge and expertise to dramatically change a very poor area of the school into modern facilities that complement and enhance the school both for the staff and students and for the wider community. Once again, Barker delivered on time and under budget on this major project.”
