Rugeley Leisure Centre, part of Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles (IHL) under Staffordshire County Council, sought to reduce the increasing costs of running its facilities. Barker was approached to conduct feasibility studies aimed at reducing energy expenses. Following these studies, IHL secured funding for the project, and Barker, in collaboration with Cotswold Energy Group, installed a Solar PV system to achieve the client’s goals.
Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles needed a solution to mitigate rising energy costs at Rugeley Leisure Centre. The goal was to install a Solar PV system that would reduce electricity bills by approximately 20%. Barker was selected for this project due to their expertise in conducting feasibility studies and their proven track record in delivering energy-efficient solutions. The deliverables included a comprehensive feasibility study and the installation of a Solar PV system.
The main challenge was the limitations imposed by the local Distribution Network Operator (DNO). This required Barker to slightly reduce the system size, as the initial target was a higher percentage of annual consumption. Despite this constraint, Barker and Cotswold Energy Group successfully installed a 178.65 kWp Solar PV system, producing 147 MWh of energy annually. This system accounts for about 20% of the centre’s annual energy generation, saving approximately £42k off the current annual electricity bill. The installation’s payback period is under three years from the initial investment.
The project was a resounding success. The Solar PV system installation at Rugeley Leisure Centre achieved the goal of a 20% reduction in electricity bills. The system’s annual energy production of 147 MWh translates to substantial financial savings and a quick payback period. This initiative not only addresses the immediate financial concerns but also contributes to the centre’s long-term sustainability goals. Feedback from IHL has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the project’s impact on operational efficiency and cost savings.
