The client requested the installation of solar arrays at Berkhamsted Girls and Pre-Prep School with the aim to reduce their expenditure on energy bills and generate sustainable energy. This initiative is designed to foster an environmentally conscious learning culture, contributing to the UK’s Net Zero goals.
Due to the long-standing relationship with Berkhamsted, Barker were appointed to handle stages 1-4 of the project. This included developing an initial desktop assessment, followed by a feasibility study and then into procurement. After awarding the project to Amelio Solar Energy, Barker managed the onsite installation in accordance with the Construction Design and Management Regulations 2015, acting as the Principal Designer to ensure the health and safety of all stakeholders.
Barker developed a suitable PV design during the feasibility stage, taking into consideration the electrical infrastructure onsite, roof constraints including existing warranties, town planning and structural viability. Similarly, Barker sought G99 approval from UK Power Networks to ensure a compliant connection to the wider electrical network, subsequently allowing Berkhamsted to sign up to the SEG scheme, permitting payments for unused electricity exported back to UKPN’s grid.
The client requested scaffolding to be struck immediately after installation, therefore the PV arrays were observed by drone survey and imaging. This method of surveying reduces the risk of falling from height when using typical equipment such as ladders and scaffolding. This further amplified health and safety whilst working amongst school staff, students and other contractors onsite.
The programme at Berkhamsted Girls School & Pre-Prep supplies 118.51 kWp, generating 107,840 kWh annually. This results in annual savings of approximately £27,000, which can be reinvested into other projects. Berkhamsted can monitor real-time electricity generation via the Solar Edge Monitoring platform, helping manage costs, especially during winter. Additionally, the client benefits from a 20-year extended inverter warranty, ensuring peace of mind for the system’s lifetime.
“Barker’s advice and guidance throughout the project, from feasibility to handover was invaluable.
We faced challenges with arranging the installation on a busy site with children and other works taking place, but these were successfully overcome.”
