The Halley Academy – Kitchen and Dining Hall Remodelling and Refurbishment

  • Client Leigh Academies Trust
  • Value £750,000
  • Location Corelli Road, London

Overview
The works at Halley Academy comprised internal remodelling and full refurbishment of the school’s main catering kitchen, dining hall and associated areas – including mechanical and electrical installations.

The Challenges
The existing kitchen was no longer fit for purpose and the dining hall was not large enough to accommodate the number of students that required school meals. The works were also required to be completed within a listed building, requiring extraneous measures to preserve its original character.

The Outcome
Our team undertook internal remodelling, which allowed the kitchen to be moved and the seating capacity of the dining hall to be greatly increased – from 220 to 350 pupils. We also fitted new replacement windows and constructed a new external fire escape stair to serve the first-floor dining hall. The kitchen and serving area were also completely replaced by a modern, fit-for-purpose catering facility. The dining hall and associated areas were then fully refurbished to include new flooring, LED lighting and decorations throughout.

Barker undertook all required statutory Planning and Listed Building applications and obtained the necessary Building Control approvals. Due to the Listed status of the building, all works were designed to return to the original character of the existing building.
